About Butler Equestrian
Butler Equestrian is located on Butler Montessori’s campus in Darnestown, Maryland. Our year-round lesson program, which is open to the public, offers english balanced seat riding lessons for riders ages 6 and up. We offer several lesson packages to suit the needs of various ages and levels of experience. For our more advanced riders we also offer on property partial horse lease and lesson packages with opportunities to compete in local horse shows.
In addition to our regular lesson and lease program Butler Equestrian is a certified USPC (United States Pony Club) Riding Center! This allows us to provide our students with the opportunity to be part of a nationwide youth organization and to benefit from the standardized proven curriculum of the USPC. Students that join the Butler Equestrian Pony Club will enjoy the opportunity to participate in Pony Club ratings (standardized levels of proficiency recognized nationwide), rallies (team competitions hosted both regionally and nationally) as well as have access to a broad network of activities and educational programs. Butler Equestrian Pony Club members will also benefit from discounts that can be applied to their regular lesson programs.
Over the summer months, Butler Equestrian is part of our very popular Butler Camp, providing riders ages 6 – 16 with the opportunity to participate in an intensive daily equestrian program. Riders ages 16 and older can apply to work as Equestrian Counselors through the summer. There is also a limited lesson program that continues through the summer for those riders that are not able to participate in camp.
At Butler Equestrian our goal is to foster relationships between horse and rider in a fun and safe environment. Butler Equestrian Program teaches horsemanship, encourages responsibility, and instills the value of teamwork and good sportsmanship. Our students learn to understand equine behavior and basic horse care in addition to riding.
Butler’s equestrian campus is attached to Seneca Creek State Park and offers both woodlands and open fields for trail riding. Well maintained Indoor and Outdoor Riding Rings along with our 22-acre campus allow for many lesson and training opportunities. There are several barns with tack rooms, a wash stall and several sizes of paddocks and pastures to accommodate the varied housing needs of our horses.
Butler’s horses are carefully screened by our Equestrian Director for use in our program. They are available to current students for lessons and partial on-property leases. Our horses are happy, healthy and loved, leading to happy, successful students!
Winter Session is a shorter version for Regular Session Riders. Details for this session will be in the registration portal starting December 1st.
Short Session: Short session lessons are designed for younger riders and riders that want to experience a fun and safe introduction to riding. Butler Equestrian Cancellation Policy
*Rescheduled Lesson: A rescheduled lesson is when a cancellation occurs within 24 hours and can be completed within 7 days of the cancellation.
*Make-up Lesson: A make-up lesson is for when a cancellation occurs within 24 hours but completion cannot occur within 7 days of the cancellation and therefore must be completed during Make-Up Session.
Lessons must be cancelled a minimum of 24 hours prior to your lesson in order to be eligible for a make-up* or a rescheduled lesson*. If you must cancel within less than 24 hours notice, it is at the discretion of Butler Equestrian as to whether or not this cancellation qualifies for a make-up or rescheduled lesson.
If you cancel a lesson within 24 hours you can choose to reschedule your lesson. Ability to reschedule lessons will be based on horses available and rider’s skill level.
Make-up lessons must be taken during the registered seasonal session. No make up lessons will be carried over to another session. If you are unable to attend make-up lessons during the make-up session, then you forfeit those lessons.
Only two make-up lessons for short sessions and three make-up lessons for regular sessions are allotted per rider. Any rider that needs to cancel beyond their make-up allotment will forfeit those lessons.
A make-up lesson is not owed for pre-scheduled or non-emergency situations. If you sign up for a specific session you are committing to all of the lesson dates.
Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of your lesson to groom and tack your horse. This is to assure our lessons start on time and that our students have a 1 hour lesson. If you do not arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before your lesson you have forfeited the lesson and are not eligible for a make-up. You can reschedule at Butler Equestrian’s discretion.
If Butler Equestrian must cancel due to weather, events, etc., you will automatically be eligible for a make-up lesson. A make-up lesson that is owed due to our cancellation will not count towards your maximum number of make-up lessons. If you are not able to participate in a make-up lesson for a lesson canceled by Butler Equestrian during the make-up session, a credit towards registration for the next session will be issued.
